Understanding basic volleyball rules for high school girls is essential for both players and coaches who are looking to excel in the sport. While basic rules help to structure overall gameplay, there are advanced rules that help officials decide close calls and a unique set of circumstances. Volleyball rules range from out of bounds rules to contact rules.
Basic Team Rules
Before taking the court, there are several essential rules that will help you structure your team as well as position your players. Each team must consist of six players, three players in the front court and three in the back. A ball must be hit to the other side of the court after three hits on the same side. No one player can hit the ball twice in a row. If a serve or shot hits one of the boundary lines on the court, it is ruled in play.
Rule Violations
These basic rule violations result in a point for the opposing team. During your serve, stepping across the service line while serving results in a violation. Failing to serve the ball over the net is another rule violation that results in a change of possession. If any player makes contact with the net while the ball is in play, a point is awarded to the other team. Reaching over the net, whether it is to spike the ball or defend a shot, is considered a violation of the rules.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Similar to other sports, unsportsmanlike conduct is penalized in women's high school volleyball. If you are acting improperly during a game, a yellow card can be given to you as a warning. If your first offense is a more serious violation or you have had multiple offenses, a referee can give you a red card, resulting in a change of possession and a point to the opposing team. Three minor violations or two major offenses will result in ejection from the game.
Court and Ball Regulations
The basic dimensions for a high school girls volleyball court are 29 feet, 6 inches by 59 feet. An attack line should be placed approximately 10 feet from the net on both sides of the court. The net height for a regulation high school game is 7 feet, 4 inches. The ball used during a game should weight between 9 and 10 oz. should contain air pressure of 4 1/2 to 6 lbs.
