A dumbbell rack holds dumbbells so they aren't strewn all over the floor. The dimensions of a dumbbell rack will vary according to the type, style and brand of rack. Dumbbell racks are typically sold in one of three styles: two-tier, three-tier or vertical rack. They are made to hold either pro-style dumbbells or hex dumbbells.
Dumbbells
Dumbbells have either hex or pro-style design. Hex dumbbells have hex-shaped weights. Each weight at the end of the dumbbell has six sides. These dumbbells don't roll away, even on a slanted surface. Racks made for hex dumbbells have straight bars where one of the six flat edges of the hex bell sets.
A pro-style dumbbell has circular weights on each end. These dumbbells will roll away if set on a slanted surface. Racks for pro-style dumbbells have half-moon curves where the bottom of the circular weight plate sets.
Quantity
Vertical and pro-style dumbbell racks have specific slots for each dumbbell. You will know the exact number of dumbbells the rack can hold, regardless of the dumbbell weights. The length of a tiered hex dumbbell rack determines the number of dumbbells it can hold. Hex racks hold more dumbbells if the dumbbells are lighter, since heavier dumbbells are bigger. A 50-lb. hex dumbbell takes up as much space as two 5-lb. hex dumbbells. A 62-inch hex rack can accommodate about seven 50-lb. dumbbells, it can hold almost twice as many 5-lb. dumbbells.
Two and Three-Tier Racks
Two and three-tier dumbbell racks are available for both hex and pro-style dumbbells. Depending on the brand and model, two-tier racks are typically between 27 and 35 inches tall and three-tier racks are between 36 and 50 inches tall. A tiered dumbbell rack is 22 to 25 inches deep. A two or three-tier dumbbell rack is usually between 45 and 100 inches long. Compact racks are smaller, being only 24 to 36 inches long.
Vertical Racks
Vertical racks have an individual slot for each dumbbell. A vertical rack has either a rectangular-shape or a pyramid shape -- it is narrow at the top and wider at the bottom. The footprint of a vertical rack is smaller than a tiered rack. A vertical rack is typically between 35 and 50 inches tall. The base is between 16 and 25 inches wide and 18 to 35 inches long.
