Epic 550 Treadmill Programs

The Epic View 550 treadmill is made by Icon Health and Fitness, which also produces other popular treadmill brands, including NordicTrack and Reebok. The 550 sells for about $1,200 as of March 2011. It offers an array of features, including a large selection of built-in workout programs that control the intensity settings for you.

Workout Categories

The Epic View 550 treadmill offers 28 preset personal trainer workouts that automatically adjust the incline and speed settings for you. Choose a program based on your fitness goal. The workouts are divided into four categories: walking workouts, weight loss workouts, aerobic workouts and performance workouts. Each category features seven individual workouts. If you're not sure how to train on a treadmill, these workouts take the guesswork out of the process.

Selecting a Program

The console possesses a button for each of the four workout categories: "Walking;" "Weight Loss;" "Aerobic Fitness;" and "Performance." To select a workout, press the button that corresponds to the desired workout category. Each time you press the button, one of the seven workout profiles displays. The maximum speed setting, maximum incline setting and the workout duration appear next to the workout graph. Press the "Start" button to select and start the workout.

Program Features

The Epic View 550 treadmill divides each program into one-minute segments. Each segment features its own speed and incline setting, although two segments can have the same settings. A visual graph points an arrow to the current workout segment. When three seconds are left on the current segment, a beep will sound, alerting you that the incline and speed settings are about to change. At the end of the workout, the walking belt will gradually slow to a stop.

Override Program Settings

The Epic View 550 treadmill has a manual programming mode. You adjust the incline and speed settings yourself throughout your workout. However, if you are using a preset program, you can override the intensity settings at any time by selecting the incline and speed buttons on the console. When the next workout segment starts, the treadmill will automatically adjust the settings, but you can override them again using the control buttons on the console.
