Home Remedies for Toe Fungus

A fungal infection of the toenail is called onychomycosis. Fungal infections can affect the fingernails, but the condition is more common with toenails. The unsightly infection is characterized by discoloration and thickening of the nail and begins as a white or yellow spot. Places that are wet and warm, such as locker rooms, are favorable to fungal growth. The fungus can present a health risk for people who have diabetes or weakened immune systems. Home treatments can be used to treat a fungal infection of a toenail.

Vicks VapoRub

According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no direct evidence that this treatment is effective, but there is anecdotal evidence supporting the use of Vicks VapoRub as a treatment for a fungal infection of the toenail. Vicks VapoRub includes the active ingredients camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol. Inactive ingredients include nutmeg oil, special petroleum, cedarleaf oil, turpentine oil and thymol. Vicks VapoRub is a topical ointment and should be applied over the toenail. However, a physician should be consulted for how often it can be applied.

Vinegar

Vinegar can reduce the spread of bacteria. Prepare a solution that is two parts water to one part vinegar. Immerse the foot in the solution to treat a toenail fungal infection. The water should be warm. Soak the foot for 15 to 20 minutes, then thoroughly clean and dry the foot. Perform this treatment daily while checking for skin irritation. Increase the percentage of water in the solution to dilute it, if the skin becomes irritated. Also, decrease the frequency of treatment if the skin becomes irritated.

Tree Tea Oil

Tree tea oil is a topical treatment that can be used for toenail fungal infections. It should not be taken orally. This oil is obtained via steam distillation of the tree melaleuca alternifolia. Seek medical advice for treatment options using tree tea oil.
