NordicTrack treadmills are made by fitness industry giant ICON Health and Fitness. Many NordicTrack treadmills have advanced features for their price range, such as high-powered motors, iFit Live adaptability and full-color displays. However, if the control console on your NordicTrack treadmill does not work properly, advanced features are not going to help you get a good workout.
Problems
A number of issues can cause the controls of your NordicTrack treadmill to become unresponsive. If the treadmill appears to be functioning normally other than a specific component, such as the incline control, there may be a calibration issue that you need to fix. If the tread belt, incline and heart rate monitor of the treadmill are all not functioning, a more serious issue may be taking place, such as an electrical short or damaged circuit board in the control panel.
Diagnosis
Before you can begin to fix the control issue on the NordicTrack treadmill, you have to find the exact cause of the problem. Newer models of NordicTrack treadmills have error messages that indicate where the problem is located in the treadmill. If your machine does not have a coded error message, try each of the controls individually to see if the entire panel is not functioning or only part of it. For example, if the incline controls do not function while the speed controls do, you know that the problem is related to the incline only.
At-Home Repair
Unplug the treadmill, wait a minute and plug it back in to give the machine a chance to recalibrate all of the controls. If the parts are moving on the treadmill and the readouts from the controls are still wrong, unplug the equipment again and remove the hood over the motor. Find the thin reed switch and magnet next to the motor pulley. Loosen or tighten the reed switch using a Philips screwdriver so it is 1/8-inch from the magnet. For incline control problems, turn the NordicTrack treadmill on and press the incline up or down button. As the incline adjusts, remove the safety key from the treadmill. Place the key back in the unit after a few seconds and the treadmill should recalibrate the incline.
Service Issues
If there are no power issues with the NordicTrack treadmill and you have ruled out calibration problems, the machine may have a bad electronics console that needs to be replaced. Contact the ICON Health and Fitness service center in your area to either order the appropriate replacement parts or have your NordicTrack treadmill serviced by a licensed technician if the product is still under warranty.
