Depression can affect men and women of all ages. Changes in your life or environment could lead to instances of depression or this condition could be part of a life stage that many men will face during the later stages of life. Sometimes referred to as male menopause, natural changes that occur in your body as you age could lead to periods of depression. The level of depression that you may experience will vary between individuals.
Symptoms
Symptoms of depression in men could include low sex-drive or impotence, loss of interest in activities that used to interest you, feelings of guilt, negative thoughts, incessant worrying, increased feelings of anxiety, increased or decreased sleep, increased periods of sadness and mood swings. Many men who experience depression are also easily agitated and may even have thoughts of suicide or death.
About Andropause
As you age, your testosterone level will slowly decrease. The Mayo Clinic reports that beginning in your 30s, your testosterone level can decrease as much as one percent every year. As your hormonal levels shift, you may notice changes in your mood and may experience sexual difficulties. These are symptoms of a life stage sometimes referred to as andropause. Andropause symptoms are similar to the symptoms women experience with menopause. However, as a woman's symptoms are sudden and easily identifiable, a man's experience with andropause may not be as obvious. Because the testosterone level shift is very gradual, you may not realize you are experiencing this change.
Treatment
Physical exercise is a great method for helping improve your mood. The Mayo Clinic reports that regular exercise and a diet of nutritious food can improve your energy levels. Not all depression in middle-aged males is due to a decrease in testosterone levels. If you feel that you need to seek professional help, consult your doctor about possible medications that can help you through your depression. You may find that talking to a professional therapist or psychologist can help you sort through and deal with the feelings you are experiencing during this difficult period.
