There are several products with variations of the name Phen DM, including C-Phen DM, Phen Tuss DM and G Phen DM. The product serves as an over-the-counter cough and cold remedy with different combinations of medicine. For example, C-Phen DM contains phenylephrine as a decongestant, dextromethorphan as a cough suppressant and chlorpheniramine as an antihistamine. Phen Tuss DM contains dextromethorphan and promethazine, a different antihistamine. G Phen DM contains phenylephrine, guaifenesin, an expectorant and dextromethorphan. Any one of these can produce serious and nonserious side effects. C-Phen DM syrup is the most common of these in liquid form.
Mental Problems
The use of C-Phen DM syrup can cause some serious side effects that require a doctor's attention. The constituents of the syrup can cause, for example, the manifestation of hallucinations. These may occur as seeing objects or people who are not present, but it also may occur as phantom noises or feeling sensations that do not exist. Mental side effects may extend to becoming confused about where you are or what you are doing. Abnormal thoughts may occur to you as a side effect of C-Phen DM. You may act differently than you normally do while taking this medicine. You may feel restless or nervous, experiencing anxiety without provocation. Immediately stop using C-Phen DM syrup if any mental side effects occur and seek counsel from your physician immediately.
Gastric Problems
C-Phen DM syrup use also may induce some nonserious side effects that typically go away on their own. This usually happens with further use of the drug when your body has adjusted to it. You may experience some minor discomfort in your digestive system because of C-Phen DM syrup. For example, you may have a mildly upset stomach or full nausea. You also may experience a sensation akin to having cotton in your mouth, called dry mouth. Over-the-counter medicines may help with digestive problems, and you can lubricate your dry mouth with ice or hard candy.
Arrhythmia
Another serious type of side effect related to C-Phen DM syrup is a change in your heartbeat. Any of the three main types of arrhythmia may occur because of the medicine. For example, your heart may appear to skip beats to beat irregularly. It also may slow down to fewer than 60 beats each minute, known as bradycardia. Tachycardia, the opposite of bradycardia, also may occur, meaning that while you are inactive, your heartbeat reaches beyond 100 beats per minute.
Hypertension
If you use C-Phen DM syrup medication you may experience symptoms that could indicate your blood pressure has increased dramatically. For example, you may feel pain in your chest or your vision may become blurry. You may have a severe headache or feel numbness in your extremities. You also may have a seizure because of high blood pressure or even a heart attack. Cease taking C-Phen DM and contact your physician if any of these problems occur.
