What Are Side Effects of Magnesium Chelates?

Magnesium amino acid chelate is a form of the mineral used in the treatment of magnesium deficiencies, specifically to keep levels of magnesium constant. A chelate contains both the metal ion and a chelating agent. The chelating agent in the case of magnesium chelate is a substance that allows your body to absorb the mineral more efficiently because of its solubility. Ask your physician if you should use a supplement of magnesium amino acid chelate before you embark on a self-administered treatment plan.

Arrhythmia

If the magnesium amino acid chelate you take builds up too much in your body, it can cause some serious side effects. An overabundance of magnesium, for example, can make your heart begin to beat irregularly. This type of arrhythmia can cause interruptions in blood flow and can lead to clotting, heart attacks and strokes. If you think you have taken too much magnesium into your body and you notice any change in your heart rhythm, seek medical attention immediately.

Diarrhea

Taking magnesium amino acid chelates often will cause mild diarrhea as a temporary and nonserious side effect. This usually will occur when you begin your use of the supplement, then pass as your body acclimates to it. However, If your diarrhea occurs in a severe form and it continues, you need medical attention. Speak with your doctor immediately if you get severe diarrhea when taking magnesium chelate supplements.

Nausea

Nausea may occur when you first begin using magnesium amino acid chelates as a supplement to your normal nutrition. It may happen as a slight stomach upset or as full nausea. You also may experience a sensation of pain in your stomach from the supplement. Stomach problems such as these side effects usually disappear on their own. Query your doctor about them if you feel you have severe versions of the side effects or if they linger.

Hypotension

Large amounts of magnesium can build up in your body, especially if you take more than the 350 mg recommended daily dose. This can lead to serious problems such as a low blood pressure. You may recognize the signs of hypotension through such symptoms as sudden dizziness, called postural hypotension, that occurs when you change your position, such as standing up suddenly. Hypotension also may make you feel fatigued or depressed. You may not be able to concentrate properly and you may faint. Your breathing may become shallow and quick. If you notice signs of hypotension, speak with your doctor about it immediately.
