Your liver is the largest organ inside your body and is located in the right, upper abdominal quadrant. The liver performs many vital functions daily to keep your body healthy, so you can't live long without a healthy, functioning liver. You may not associate vitamin A consumption with liver benefits, but it can positively affect your liver health.

Liver Functions

One of the liver's most important jobs is to convert food into nutrients and substances your body needs. For instance, bile is produced by the liver to help digest fats. The liver also stores fats, sugars, iron and various vitamins, like vitamin A, for future use. However, if your diet contains too much saturated fat and refined sugar, it may damage your liver and lead to weight gain. Your liver also makes needed proteins that are essential for blood clotting and detoxifies the body by removing or changing drugs, alcohol and other substances.

About Vitamin A

Vitamin A makes your eyes stronger, promotes bone growth and tooth development, maintains healthy skin, promotes healthy reproduction, may improve your immune system, acts as an antioxidant in the form of beta-carotene, may help treat acne and may have healing effects. Vitamin A is obtained from animal sources like liver, fish oils, egg yolks and dairy products. Vitamin A may also be in the form of beta-carotene which is later converted by the body. Beta-carotene is found in fruits and vegetables like carrots, broccoli, spinach, squash, peaches and apricots. Most Americans receive a sufficient amount of vitamin A in a normal diet, though anyone who has an insufficient diet or abuses alcohol or other drugs should take supplements.

Cleansing Effects

It is important to keep your liver healthy so it can keep you healthy. We are surrounded by pollutants that may be ingested and impact the liver. In addition, a person's daily diet may not be adequate or ideal. The best vegetables for the liver are colorful veggies like carrots because they contain antioxidants like beta-carotene. Antioxidants like beta-carotene have a healing and cleansing impact on the liver.

Cancer Research

The American Cancer Society indicates that some research shows vitamin A and related molecules may be able to change cancer cells and prevent normal cells from becoming cancerous. Some methods of alternative therapy involve using beta-carotene supplements to cleanse and detoxify the liver, which may help prevent cancer in the organ, although research is ongoing. Don't take a vitamin A supplement without the advice and direction of a medical professional, as high doses are toxic.
