When you are eating out on a low-carbohydrate diet, it might be difficult to find items that are suitable for your plan. On a low-carb diet you typically eat between 50 and 150 g of carbohydrates daily. Eating a cheeseburger with fries and a soda can put you way over this allowance. Always check nutritional information before consuming meals from fast food restaurants.
Salads
Salads at fast food restaurants are typically your best bet if you want to stick to your low-carb diet. For instance, the Premium Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken from McDonald's has only 12 g of carbs, while the TenderGrill Garden Salad from Burger King only has 9 g of carbs. To keep carbohydrates low, use dressing such as Caesar and Italian. Check the carb amounts on the dressing packet as well before adding to your salad.
Sides
Look at the fruit options at fast food restaurants. Instead of ordering fries with your meal, which can have over 56 g of carbs per medium size, choose a low-carb side of fruit. For instance, Burger King sells Apple Fries, which contain only 3 g of carbs per serving. However, not all fruit options are considered low carb. The Fruit and Walnut Salad from McDonald's contains 31 g of carbohydrates.
Mexican Entrees
You can still enjoy foods from Taco Bell and Chipotle when you are following a low-carbohydrate diet. For instance, choose one of the burrito bowls from Chipotle and consume less than 10 g of carbs. When visiting Taco Bell, skip the taco shell or tortilla wrap and instead just eat the meat, cheese and vegetables.
Sandwiches
Sandwiches without the bread are the typical way to ensure you go low-carb at fast food restaurants. Hamburgers, lunch meat and grilled chicken can all be enjoyed by removing the bun. To ensure that the meal stays low carb, use only a small amount of ketchup or barbecue sauce. Do not order any meats that are breaded.
