Cellulite is the uneven appearance skin can get when the connective tissue beneath the skin becomes weakened. This condition is most common among overweight individuals, but it is not uncommon in those of a normal body weight. Women are affected by cellulite at least nine times more often than men due to structural differences beneath the surface of the skin, according to Michael Murray in his book ''Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine.'' Some herbal treatments have been shown to help reduce the appearance of cellulite on the skin.

Step 1

Use an herb called centella asiatica. Also known as gotu kola, it has been studied and found effective in lessening the appearance of cellulite, according to Murray. The herb works by enhancing connective tissue integrity by stimulating the manufacture of structural components known as glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs, which are a major component in which collagen fibers are embedded. They support strengthened connective tissue, lessening the appearance of cellulite. This herb is taken orally as a supplement. Visit a naturopathic doctor for dose and frequency instructions in relation to your personal cellulite condition.

Step 2

Take aesculus hippocastanum. This herb is also known as horse chestnut and can be taken orally or used topically in the treatment of cellulite as well as varicose veins. This herb's effects decrease capillary permeability by reducing the number and size of pores in the capillary walls. This works to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Applying this herb topically is also helpful in reducing the appearance of bruises.

Step 3

Apply fucus vesiculosus. Also known as bladderwrack, this seaweed plant is high in iodine, which is thought to stimulate thyroid function, contributing to weight loss efforts. Bladderwrack can also be used topically, which produces results that are smoothing, softening and toning on the skin, thus reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Tips and Warnings

  • A naturopathic doctor or herbalist can assist you in finding which treatment is best for your personal situation.
  • Do not start taking herbal supplements without first talking to a physician.
