Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have created a diet plan called YOU: On a Diet that is catching the public's attention for claims of real weight loss results. The diet stresses the principle of eliminating a small amount of calories from your daily eating habits along with forbidding several specific foods to lose weight slowly and steadily for a life-long diet plan.
Cutting Calories
Drs. Oz and Roizen's weight loss plan entitled YOU: On a Diet suggests dieters reduce daily caloric intake by 100 calories to lose a pound of body weight every month. Both physicians suggest eating healthy, fresh foods such as fresh vegetables and fruits to help eliminate 100 calories a day from your diet. These doctors also suggest consuming minimal amounts of saturated fat, recommending 4 g of saturated fat or less per serving to help decrease calorie consumption.
Eliminating Specific Foods
Along with cutting 100 calories from your daily food consumption, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggest eliminating enriched flour, bleached flour, high fructose corn syrup, sugar and hydrogenated oil from your diet. Many nutrients are removed from enriched flour causing it to act more like a simple carbohydrate than a complex carbohydrate. Enriched flour is often bleached and may have some nutrients added, but often these nutrients are not the same as the original product's content. High fructose corn syrup and sugar are also simple carbohydrates that do not give lasting energy or nutritional benefits. Hydrogenated oil contains high levels of trans fat, which is a dangerous form of fat that can quickly pack fat on your body.
Avoiding Slower Metabolism
Cutting such a minimal number of calories from your daily diet may prevent your body from decreasing your metabolic rate. When you drastically decrease the number of calories in your daily diet, your body could respond by lowering your metabolism. This happens in response to a natural defense within your body to prevent starvation; when you consume too few calories, your body thinks it is starving and lowers your metabolism to conserve energy. According to Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen, eliminating a small number of calories from your daily diet will encourage gradual weight loss without lowering your metabolism.
Life-Long Process
Although the weight loss will be slow and gradual, the lure of Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen's diet is its simplicity and the possibility of maintaining a healthy body weight for life. These doctors claim that even though the weight loss will not happen quickly, the YOU: On a Diet program teaches techniques that can be followed for a lifetime.
