Dieting in summertime has no real difference from dieting in winter; however, many people have more success shedding weight in summer than they do using the same diet in winter. Whether it's the inability to hide under a bulky sweater or having access to more seasonal vegetables through various farmers' markets, dieting in summer can be made even easier with a few simple lifestyle changes.
Seasonal Foods
When the weather is nice and people are ready to get outside after a long winter stuck indoors, few can resist the lure of gardening. And if gardening is not an area of expertise, many people search for farmers' markets, where fresh and local vegetables are bought for low prices. Either way, the motivation to eat fresh vegetables along with the vegetables' higher availability makes healthy summer eating much easier. Plus, gardening, along with walking or biking to your farmers' market, can burn calories, keep you energized and motivate you to stick with your diet.
Smart Substitutes
Cold desserts, such as ice cream, sugary snow cones and carbonated beverages, can make sticking to a summer diet a bit harder. However, you can still enjoy these summer classics while sticking to your diet. Make smart substitutes when you feel a craving. Choose a frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. Order a snow cone plain or with lemon and lime flavoring as long as syrup is not used. Drink water or diet carbonated beverages to help cut calories where possible and still stay cool.
Adequate Hydration
Drinking water and staying hydrated can help you consume less calories throughout your day. Plus, thirst and hunger can sometimes mimic each other. When you are thirsty, your body may mistakenly believe that you need food when all you really need is a cool glass of water. If you experience a craving, try drinking a glass of water and waiting 10 minutes. You may find that you were not hungry after all. Besides, when the risk of dehydration is high as it is in summer, it is imperative to drink plenty of water each day.
Outside Motivation
Use outside motivation to keep you from venturing away from your diet. Seeing others exercising outside, wearing swimsuits and getting in the slim summer shape can help boost your motivation to do the same. Instead of focusing on how intense your craving is, focus on how good you will feel and look if you ignore the craving, choose a smart substitute and stick to your diet.
