Metabolism is a biochemical process that occurs within the body to convert the foods that you eat to energy. The higher your metabolism, the easier it is for your body to burn more calories. Factors such as your weight, sex and age determine whether your metabolism is high or low. However, according to Rachel Laferriere, author of "365 Ways to Boost Your Metabolism," you can consume spicy brown mustard daily to boost your metabolism up to 25 percent several hours after eating a meal. Consult your doctor before changing your diet.

Step 1

Measure 1 tsp. of spicy brown mustard and add it to an 8-ounce glass of water. Consume this beverage with all daily meals. According to Rachel Laferriere, mustard that lacks spice, such as mellow or yellow mustard, will not spark thermogenesis in the body to increase metabolism.

Step 2

Incorporate spicy mustard into snacks throughout the day. For example, dip raw vegetables such as carrots and celery sticks into mustard as a snack.

Step 3

Spread spicy mustard on sandwiches and reduced-fat hot dogs, or add it to salad dressing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Asian or Mexican spicy mustard tends to be spicier than American brands. Consume spicy mustard with each meal to boost effectiveness.
