Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Emmy-winning host of his own television show, professor of surgery at Columbia University, and heart surgeon is the creator of the Dr. Oz Ultimate Diet. The doctor claims his diet -- which is based on his 2010 book "YOU: On a Diet" -- will "reboot your body" and change the way you eat and think about food.

Dr. Oz claims his Ultimate Diet will help you lose weight and feel healthier. The diet is based on foods and supplements that fight fat, combat inflammation and alter hormones and chemicals that influence hunger. The plan focuses on waist size as the indicator of overall health. Dr. Oz advises regular exercise, provides methods to cope with cravings and recommends a visit with a doctor for certain medical tests.

Waist Measurement

The Dr. Oz Ultimate Diet places more importance on waist measurement than weight. A large waist measurement is one of the symptoms that indicates a possibility of metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that signify increased risk for heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. In addition to abdominal obesity, metabolic syndrome is characterized by elevated blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, improper use of glucose and insulin, increased blood clotting and an inflammatory state. At least three of these symptoms must be present to indicate metabolic syndrome. Dr. Oz recommends you visit a doctor to have some of these values checked in addition to measuring the waistline.

Foods to Avoid

The Dr. Oz Ultimate Diet instructs followers to avoid simple sugars and syrups, such as dextrose, high-fructose corn syrup, brown sugar, honey and molasses, but allows a little table sugar and honey to be kept on hand for use in recipes. Followers must avoid saturated fat, which is found in four-legged animal products, butter, lard, milk fat and tropical oils, and also avoid trans fats, which are partially hydrogenated fats. Dieters must also steer clear of any flours that are not 100 percent whole grain. These foods all promote chronic low-grade inflammation, which sets the stage for heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia.

Recommended Foods

The Dr. Oz Ultimate Diet allows a wide variety of foods that contain healthy fats, lean protein and fiber, while limiting sugar, sodium, saturated fats and processed foods. Some allowable foods are brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, steel-cut oats, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, dried fruit, natural peanut butter, olives, olive and canola oils, skim milk, fortified orange juice, eggs, low-fat yogurt, shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese, skinless poultry, salmon, trout, frozen unsweetened berries, flaxseed and an array of fruits and vegetables. The diet also allows coffee, tea and white wine.
