Alternative treatments for tumors are plentiful, and one herbal tea that might have anti-tumor properties is essiac tea, which is made of a mixture of four herbs. An essiac derivative called Flor Essence uses these four herbs, plus an additional four herbs. These tea mixtures are said to have anti-cancer properties, but study results have been mixed, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Before using essiac tea to treat tumors, ask your oncologist whether this is a safe and appropriate alternative treatment for you to use.

Step 1

Drink tea made with 1 oz. of essiac 1 to 3 times daily, suggests the American Cancer Society. It should be consumed on an empty stomach -- or two hours before or after a meal -- for about 1 to 2 years. Different preparations might require spring or nonfluoridated water; check the package to see what is recommended.

Step 2

Consume 1 to 2 oz. of Flor Essence daily. This dosage is the recommended dose by the manufacturer, says the National Cancer Institute. The amount can vary, depending on the specific condition for which it is being used.

Step 3

Avoid drinking this tea while you are receiving treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation. The National Cancer Institute says proponents of the tea claim traditional cancer treatments might interfere with the healing action of the tea.

Tips and Warnings

  • Side effects of these teas can vary and might include headaches, skin blemishes, nausea, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms, says the National Cancer Institute. If you have any of these symptoms, stop drinking the tea and consult your health care team.
  • Do not drink essiac tea or Flor Essence without first talking with your oncologist or treatment team. This is an herbal remedy and not subject to approval by the Food and Drug Administration. It might interact with medications or other supplements you are taking and cause serious side effects.
