Protein drinks are all the rage these days. Whether you're a bodybuilder, a recreational athlete or simply a dieter looking to drop a few pounds, you've probably seen advertisements for protein shakes and drinks designed to help you achieve your nutritional goals. But with so many different types on the market, it can be difficult to know which protein drink is right for you. For best results, keep some basic guidelines in mind when choosing natural protein drinks.
Step 1
Consider your nutritional needs and goals. The type of protein drink that's best for you depends on your unique situation. According to the UCLA Health Network, if you're trying to drop pounds, a drink that's especially high in protein can satisfy your appetite when used as a meal replacement. If you're an endurance athlete, you'll need slightly more carbs than protein. Read labels to compare the amounts of protein vs. carbohydrates in the protein drinks you're considering to select the best one for you.
Step 2
Check the source of protein in various drinks. Natural protein drinks generally contain protein from whey, casein or soy. Whey is best after intense workouts, when you need a fast-acting protein source, whereas casein protein is good for a meal replacement because it is slower to absorb and therefore keeps you fuller longer. Soy protein drinks may be ideal if you cannot tolerate milk products.
Step 3
Watch the amount of sugar, advises Eliza Decker of Syracuse University Recreation Services. Some protein drinks contain a lot of added sugar, which can be particularly problematic if your goal is weight loss. When comparing protein drinks, choose the one with the fewest grams of sugar per serving for optimal health.
