Pineapple is a tropical fruit that is native to South America, although it now grows in the Philippines, Cuba, South Africa, Hawaii and tropical areas of North America. It is characterized by a crown of long, spiky leaves and a thick rind that covers fibrous, juicy flesh. This fruit offers several nutrients that may help alleviate joint pain.

Bromelain

Pineapple is the only cultivated fruit that contains bromelain. This enzyme has played an important role in Central and South American medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent. The bromelain found in fresh pineapple may help reduce swelling and inflammation of muscles and connective tissues, which may relieve joint pain associated with sprains, arthritis and overuse of joints. However, bromelain may also interfere with blood clotting.

Vitamin C

Pineapple is a rich source of vitamin C, which is a potent immune system booster that may reduce damage to your joints caused by viral and bacterial infection. This vitamin is also an antioxidant that may help prevent free radical damage to your joints. Vitamin C may offer anti-inflammatory benefits that reduce stiffness and pain caused by muscle and connective tissue swelling.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A, another important vitamin found in pineapple, is essential for the rebuilding of bone, connective tissue and muscle cells. This may help repair damage caused by arthritis and sprains. Like vitamin C, vitamin A may improve immune system function. It is also an antioxidant vitamin.

Calcium

Pineapples contain calcium, an important mineral for bone health. This mineral may help alleviate bone pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis and osteoporosis. Calcium may help prevent muscle cramps that can contribute to joint pain. It may also offer anti-inflammatory benefits, and may help regulate nerve impulses that transmit pain signals to your brain.
