Pom poms are an integral part of a cheerleader's uniform. Available in a variety of sizes and colors, pom poms grab the crowd's attention and add color to a squad's cheer or routine. The size of pom pom appropriate for your squad depends on how you'll use them and how often. When purchasing cheerleading pom poms, you'll need to decide on the handle type and color of the poms as well.

Strand Length

Most pom poms come in sizes based on strand length. Pom pom strands can range from 4 to 14 inches, but most standard poms used for games and performances have 4-, 6-, 8- or 10-inch strands. The size of the poms depends on how they will be used in a choreographed routine or cheer. Smaller poms, such as a 4-inch size, are easier to handle and hold through the duration of a routine, while 6- to 8-inch poms are common for cheering at a sporting event. Larger poms are heavier to handle, but add a colorful element to a cheerleading performance. Youth cheerleaders should use smaller poms that are lighter and easier to maneuver.

Strand Width

Strand width is another option to consider when purchasing pom poms. Although some companies may offer additional options, most poms come with a 3/4-inch or 3/16-inch strand width. The standard width of the vinyl strands is 3/4 inch. These wider strands produce a fluffier, ball-like shape, while narrow strands have a flowing look that adds movement to a routine.

Handle Style

The type of handle depends on personal preference and what's most comfortable for the cheerleader. Most companies offer four types of handle on a pom pom. The baton handle, the most common handle, is approximately 4 inches long and located in the middle of the pom pom. The hidden, or dowel, handle has a small baton-like handle with an elastic loop on the top. The elastic band goes around your wrist, while holding the baton in your hand. The loop handle has a 3 inch baton with two loops on each side of the baton. This option is recommended for larger pom poms. Pom poms with a block, or cap, handle have a plastic block with a loop on top. Like, the loop handle, the block is often visible and recommended for larger pom poms.

Additional Considerations

In addition to size and handle type, there are a few other details to consider when choosing pom poms for your cheerleading squad. Poms come in a variety of colors and styles. Most companies offer pom poms that consist of one, two or three colors. Most teams choose the color based on the team and uniform colors, but squads may choose bolder, contrasting colors for special performances. Some companies offer a variety of pom pom styles including plastic, vinyl, metallic, glitter and wet-look options.
