Headaches are characterized by discomfort or pain in the face or head area and may occur at any time and may interfere with your daily activities. Some headaches may be the result of underlying health conditions and others may be the result of tension, also referred to as tension headaches. According to the Yale Medical Group, some headaches may lead to blurred vision, vomiting without nausea, personality changes, and intensity of pain with a sneeze or cough. Some herbs, when used as an herbal drink, may help soothe pain associated with a headache. Speak with your doctor before using herbs to treat headaches and other conditions.
Willow Bark
Willow bark has been used since 400 B.C. to reduce pain and inflammation. Today, it is still used to treat inflammatory conditions, headaches and back pain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the bark of the white willow contains a chemical similar to that of aspirin called salicin, which was used to develop aspirin in the 1800s. The salicin found in willow bark may bring relief to headaches. Willow bark is available in the form of dried herb, powdered herb in capsule form and tincture. To make an herbal drink with willow bark, the university suggests boiling up to 2 tsp. of dried herb in 8 oz. of water and allowing it to simmer for up to 15 minutes. You may drink up to 4 cups per day. Get your doctor's OK before taking willow bark to ensure your safety.
