The Nutrisystem diet plan, developed in 1972, was one of the first diet plans to offer home meal delivery. You can choose specific meal plans for a man or woman and further customize your plan by choosing basic, silver, vegetarian or diabetic. Each meal plan involves low-glycemic meals that are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.

Diet Basics

The Nutrisystem diet involves prepackaged frozen or shelf-stable meals that are delivered right to your door. Because the meals are prepackaged, the meal portions are already controlled for you. Each meal contains a balance of low-glycemic carbohydrates, protein and a small amount of fat. When you sign up for the Nutrisystem diet, you also gain access to an online forum that offers recipes, goal trackers and forums where you can connect with other dieters. The Nutrisystem diet website also gives you access to counselors and dietitians who provide support and offer answers to your questions.

Types of Plans

The basic meal plan involves 28 days' worth of low-glycemic meals. On the basic plan, you eat three meals and two snacks per day. The basic plan targets most adults who sign up for Nutrisystem. The silver plan is designed for adults over 65 and involves eating six small meals throughout the day. The vegetarian plan follows the same theory as the basic plan, although there are 90 vegetarian-friendly meals to choose from. The diabetic plan is specifically designed to help type 2 diabetics control blood sugar levels, lose weight and lower cholesterol.

Other Options

After you choose the plan that is right for you, you can choose foods using two options. The first option, called the Favorites Package, has 28 days' worth of meals chosen for you. The second option allows you to customize your meal plan, choosing your own foods from a list of meals and snacks. When you place your order, you also have the option to choose a one-time delivery or an auto-delivery option, which sends a delivery every month at a discounted price.

Cost

The Nutrisystem website claims that the diet costs as little as $11 per day. The monthly cost equates to $308 and the yearly cost equates to $3,696. In addition to the cost of food, you also are responsible for paying any shipping costs. Enrolling in a family plan or the auto-delivery option will give you a discount, although the website does not specify the exact price until you sign up for the program.
