The uterus plays a critical role in a variety of bodily functions, including menstruation and pregnancy. Medical problems may occur, though, that call for pharmaceutical intervention to stop pain or otherwise help the uterus work better. A variety of herbs can naturally improve the function of your uterus, but always talk to your doctor first before taking herbs for medicinal purposes.
Dong Quai
Dong quai, a Chinese herb prized for its root, is thought by herbalists to have positive effects on the uterus. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is prescribed to decrease pain associated with menstruation as well as to improve circulation. Avoid taking dong quai if you are pregnant; MedlinePlus notes one reported case of an herbal treatment containing it that caused birth defects. Since it has an impact on uterine muscles, it may also cause contractions that can trigger miscarriage or preterm labor.
Red Raspberry Leaf
Often taken by women who want to get pregnant, red raspberry leaf may improve the lining of your uterus, an action thought to increase your chances of conception. The American Pregnancy Association reports that after conception you should only take this herbal treatment during the final trimester of pregnancy due to its effect on the uterus; it can cause uterine contractions that may bring on childbirth. A study published in the May 2010 issue of the journal "Reproductive Sciences" refutes findings that red raspberry leaf effects the uterus, however. Animal studies carried out with red raspberry leaf extract and red raspberry leaf tea failed to produce contractions. More research is needed to confirm red raspberry leaf's effect -- or noneffect -- on the uterus.
Shepherd's Purse
Also known as lady's purse, mother's heart, case weed and witches pouch, shepherd's purse is a biennial herb that bears white flowers and small seedpods. It has long found use as a treatment for uterine bleeding, and Asian herbalists prescribe it for treating urinary tract infections. This herb may also stimulate uterine contractions, so do not take it if you are pregnant to avoid miscarriage.
Blue Cohosh
Blue cohosh may provide benefits for your uterus. A study in the December 2007 issue of "The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association" indicates that this herb may aid in regulating your menstrual period and decreasing the amount of menstrual bleeding that occurs during this time. It may also cause contractions, though, so avoid consuming it if you are pregnant.
