Fish oil is a liquid or soft gel supplement that is used for its concentrated content of omega-3 fatty acids. These polyunsaturated fatty acids are considered a healthy dietary fat. Omega-3 is essential in the diet because it is a substance the body cannot produce on its own. If omega-3 as an essential fatty acid, or EFA, is not eaten or supplemented, the body will be deficient in EFAs. Deficiency of omega-3 can affect many normal body functions, from mood and memory to the health of the skin.
Brain and Memory Function
Omega-3 has been found helpful in reducing some neurological conditions such as depression and ADHD, since the polyunsaturated fat cells support the health of a protective layer which covers brain cells. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, patients who were taking antidepressants and fish oil experienced better results than patients taking just the antidepressant. UMMC also mentions mixed results in simillar testing done regarding fish oil and its results with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and ADHD.
Symptoms of Menopause
According to Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN of WomentoWomen.com, fish oil or omega-3 supplementation has been successful as an aid to lessen the symptoms associated with menopause. Patients in her clinic who supplemented omega-3 fish oil experienced lessened hot flashed and mood swings. They also enjoyed the benefits of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease prevention. University of Maryland's Medical Center also mentions a study in which women with menstrual cramps experienced relief when taking fish oil supplements.
Beauty Benefits
Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil supplementation are supportive of healthy and clear skin. Redness and inflammation in the skin and around breakouts can be calmed and reduced with fish oil supplementation. UMMC also states that people supplementing fish oil who are sun sensitive, experience less sensitivity to UV rays. Psoriasis may experience some benefits from fish oil, however the results seem to vary depending on the individual.
Other Benefits
Fish oil has been tested on many different symptoms and conditions with positive results. Other medical conditions that MayoClinic.com mentions fish oil has had positive results with include high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis and many more. UMMC also lists slowed development of some types of cancer including prostate, breast and colon.
