Human chorionic gonadotropin, or HCG, is commonly known as a hormone produced by pregnant women to help provide nutrients for a growing fetus. However, this hormone is present in both men and women and has other functions. HCG also signals an area of the brain called the hypothalamus to increase metabolism of stored fat in the body. Taking HCG hormone as a supplement is thought to help facilitate weight loss by burning fat and promoting a feeling of fullness. Using HCG for weight loss is controversial, and the medical evidence is not yet conclusive. Discuss this weight loss method with your doctor before trying it.
Step 1
Talk to your doctor about losing weight. Get weighed and have your body mass index calculated at your doctor's office. Discuss how much weight you would like to lose and a healthy method for weight loss. Your doctor will advise you whether HCG is a suitable option.
Step 2
Purchase HCG hormone drops for weight loss from a health food store. Use the drops along with the recommended diet as prescribed by the product information. Take the exact dosage of drops recommended.
Step 3
Continue using the HCG hormone drops for the duration recommended. Alternatively, HCG hormone can be taken as an oral spray or in tablet form. Take the exact dosage recommended on the product label. Follow the directions closely, and monitor your weight and measure your waist size each week.
Step 4
Eat a balanced, low-calorie diet. Additionally, exercise for at least 20 to 30 minutes, four to six times a week. See your doctor for regular health checkups and to ensure that your weight loss is progressing in a healthy manner.
Tips and Warnings
- Though HCG is available in several forms, including drops, sprays and tablets, the research study by the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," which showed a positive result in weight loss, used the injectable form of HCG. However, this study was conducted in 1973, and other studies have not reported weight loss with the use of HCG. This hormone weight-loss supplement has not been adequately tested to confirm that it will work.
- HCG must be combined with a low-calorie diet. This may not be suitable for some individuals and can lead to poor body and mind function, as well as increased hunger. Low calorie intake can also lead to emotional imbalances. HCG is a potent hormone, and ingesting or injecting synthetic forms of it may have adverse effects that are not yet known. Stop taking HCG and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any side effects.
