The thyroid gland, located in the neck, is responsible for making thyroid hormone, which is needed to maintain proper metabolism. Hypothyroidism is a condition that occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This can result in symptoms of tiredness, depression, weight gain and cold body temperature. Certain vitamins and minerals are necessary for thyroid function. Low thyroid levels can only be diagnosed by a medical practitioner. As with all conditions, check with your healthcare professional before beginning a regimen to treat hypothyroidism.
B vitamins
B vitamins improve the amount of oxygen that is available to cells, and they also aid cellular energy production. This is important for proper thyroid functioning as well as red blood cell formation and immune function. B vitamins can be obtained through the diet from foods, such as whole grains and fresh vegetables, or they can be taken as a supplement in the form of B-complex vitamins or multivitamins.
Iron
Iron is important for thyroid functioning and is also essential for enzyme and hemoglobin production in the blood. Conditions of anemia may have adverse effects on the thyroid gland; however, iron supplements should only be taken by those who have been diagnosed as anemic by a medical professional. Iron is readily available from many foods such as meat and green vegetables; however, iron may impair the absorption of some thyroid medications. Consult a doctor before beginning iron supplements or starting a diet high in iron.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids, like those obtained from fish oil, are thought to be useful in cases of hypothyroidism. Omega-3 fatty acids may decrease inflammation, lower cholesterol, and promote healthy thyroid function. Omega-3 fatty acids may be obtained through the diet from foods, such as salmon and other meaty, cold water fish. They may also be taken as a supplement.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants are useful for preventing cellular damage and improving immune functioning, which may be helpful for thyroid disorder. Vitamins C and E, which may be taken as supplements, are both antioxidants; however, foods contain many more complex antioxidants that are best obtained through the diet. Foods such as berries, cherries and tomatoes are high in antioxidants.
