Nafcillin Side Effects

Nafcillin, sold under the brand names of Unipen and Nallpen, is an antibiotic medication that belongs to the drug category of penicillins, according to Drugs.com. This medication treats infections caused by the staphylococcus bacteria. Nafcillin is available as a capsule and as an injection. If you are taking nafcillin, be aware of its side effects.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects of nafcillin include fainting, lightheadedness, fever, frequent or decreased ruination and rapid weight gain, according to Drugs.com. Users may also experience bloody diarrhea, swelling, itching and muscle pain. Seek immediate medical help if you have these side effects.

Physical Side Effects

According to RxList.com, nafcillin can harm your body in many ways. It can cause bronchospasm (trouble breathing), hypotension (low blood pressure) or pain and swelling at the injection site. You may also experience hematuria (blood in your urine), proteinuria (protein in your urine), neutropenia (low blood cell counts) and pseudomembranous colitis (a bacterial infection of your large intestine).

Allergic Reaction

You can also develop an allergic reaction to nafcillin if you are allergic to its ingredients. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include trouble breathing, hives and swelling of your face, lips and throat. Drugs.com states that a delayed allergic can occur within two days and even after four weeks of taking nafcillin. Get immediate help if you have these symptoms.

Mild Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, less serious side effects of nafcillin include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache and vaginal itching. Thrush (white patches inside your throat and mouth) are also mild side effects of nafcillin use.

Signs of Overdose

If you take more nafcillin than prescribed, you may develop symptoms of an overdose. These side effects include muscle pain, twitching, confusion, numbness and fainting. You may also experience seizures and lightheadedness.
