The herpes simplex virus can impact both the mouth and the genitals, according to the American Society of Health (ASHASTD). They suggest that between 50 to 80 percent of American adults have the oral herpes virus and about one in five adults have genital herpes. The symptoms of herpes do not vary much, but some individuals may not experience any signs of the virus.
Timing
ASHASTD points out that symptoms may show up within days after exposure to the herpes virus, but sometimes it can take months, weeks or even years. It may be possible that a person has no symptoms or very mild symptoms. The first outbreak can be more severe than recurring symptoms, suggests the Mayo Clinic.
Initial Outbreak
The first outbreak, as described by the Mayo Clinic, may be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, including a headache, muscle pain, fever and swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck or groin areas. Some individuals may experience these symptoms with future outbreaks as well.
Prodrome
The prodrome symptoms of herpes serve as a warning of outbreak. ASHASTD describes these symptoms as itching, tingling, pain, sensitivity and redness in the area where the outbreak will occur. Within a few days, the herpes may appear.
Blistering
Small red bumps will appear on the skin. The Mayo Clinic explains that oral herpes virus will lead to blistering on the lips, near the lips and possibly on the tongue. Genital herpes can appear in the vaginal area, external genital region, buttocks, anus or cervix in women. The Mayo Clinic states that men experience genital herpes on the penis, scrotum, buttocks, anus, thighs or inside the urethra.
The blisters cause pain and discomfort. The Mayo Clinic indicates that moving the mouth or even urinating can be difficult or painful.
Ulcer
After several days, the blisters will burst and become ulcers. ASHASTD explains that the lesions can ooze or bleed before scabbing over. New blisters can appear before the first clusters have even healed. It is during this time that some individuals will experience mild flu-like symptoms again.
