The Side Effects of Flumazenil

Flumazenil, also known as Romazicon, is a medication belonging to the drug category of benzodiazepine receptor antagonists, according to RxList.com. It is used to reverse the sedative effects of benzodiazepines, a type of sleep-inducing medication. Flumazenil is given intravenously (through your veins) and is usually given under your doctor's close supervision. If you are taking flumazenil, you should be aware of its medical side effects.

Physical Side Effects

According to RxList.com, flumazenil can lead to physical side effects, including fatigue, pain at the injection site, a skin rash, sweating, hot flushes or dry mouth. Because flumazenil reverses the effects of benzodiazepines, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, hyperventilation, dizziness or tachycardia (rapid heartbeat). Visual problems and tingling sensations are other physical side effects of flumazenil.

Seizures

According to Drugs.com, flumazenil may lead to the onset of seizures in people who have had withdrawal symptoms, recent therapy with benzodiazepines and convulsive activity before ever using flumazenil. You should talk to your doctor to discuss this serious side effect.

Psychological Side Effects

Flumazenil may also affect your mind and cause unprompted crying, euphoria or depression, according to RxList.com. Users may also experience paranoia, fear, panic attacks or depersonalization (feeling as if you are in a dream state).

Rare Side Effects

Rare side effects of flumazenil include bradycardia (slow heartbeat), tachycardia (fast heartbeat), arrythmias (irregular heartbeat), chest pain or hypertension (high blood pressure). You may also experience a speech disorder or hiccups.
