Numerous conditions may cause bleeding in your digestive tract. A peptic ulcer is a common cause of digestive tract bleeding, states the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. Peptic ulcers may be caused by Helicobacter pylori infections or the chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. Certain herbs may help treat your bleeding ulcers. However, before using herbs for this health purpose, discuss the risks and benefits of herbs with your health care provider.

About Ulcers

Ulcers, or erosions in your tissues, commonly manifest throughout your gastrointestinal tract and may be particularly common in your esophagus, stomach and the first segment of your small intestine, or duodenum. Small ulcers, notes MedlinePlus, may not cause any noticeable signs or symptoms. However, some ulcers may cause significant bleeding. Possible ulcer-related symptoms include bloody stools, blood in your vomit, chest pain, unintentional weight loss and fatigue. There are several tests that are commonly used to help diagnose ulcers, including certain imaging techniques.

Appropriate Herbs

There are many herbs that may be appropriate in treating your bleeding ulcer. In his book, "The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine," naturopathic physician Joseph E. Pizzorno Jr. reports that three herbs may be particularly helpful in treating this health problem: licorice, rhubarb and plantain. Other beneficial herbs may include bupleurum, bayberry, catnip, garlic and comfrey. Further scientific testing may be required to determine the effectiveness of these herbal remedies.

Featured Remedy

Rhubarb is one of the most powerful herbal remedies in treating bleeding ulcers. In her book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch states that rhubarb -- which may be ingested in tablet or juice form -- has long been used in treating intestinal bleeding, including the intestinal bleeding that often comes with peptic ulcers. The roots and stalks of the rhubarb plant contain numerous medicinal ingredients and are used in herbal supplements and preparations.

Considerations

Blood in your vomit or stool may indicate a serious underlying health problem that requires timely treatment to prevent further health complications. Because there are many conditions that may cause blood in your vomit or stool -- including ulcers -- you should report to your doctor as soon as possible if you experience these signs and symptoms. Your doctor may render an accurate diagnosis and suggest relevant treatment strategies to combat your ailment. Discuss the immediate and long-term health ramifications of herbs with your doctor.
