Many Americans suffer from tension headaches as a result of stress, fatigue and other causes. In many cases, tension headaches can be relieved with rest and relaxation. In contrast to most other types of pain, the cause of headache pain can be difficult to determine. Many individuals suffering from headaches require over-the-counter or prescription pain medications. Butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine tablets are commonly used to treat tension headaches.
Fioricet
Marketed under the brand name Fioricet, butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine tablets are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Association for the treatment of tension headaches. Fioricet is a combination drug that includes three active ingredients. Although the exact mechanism of action in relieving headache pain is not well understood, each ingredient contributes towards the management of headache pain.
Butalbital Function
As a barbiturate, butalbital depresses the central nervous system. As a result, butalbital has a calming and relaxing effect on the body. Each tablet of Fioricet contains 50 mg of butalbital. Because butalbital depresses activity, the drug has the potential to cause oversedation. Since butalbital has the potential for addiction, Fioricet is classified in the United States as a controlled substance.
Acetaminophen Function
More commonly known by the brand name Tylenol, acetaminophen is widely available over the counter and is used for the treatment of mild pain and fever. Acetaminophen inhibits the production of prostaglandins and alters the sensation of pain within the body. Although relatively safe, acetaminophen should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Each tablet of Fioricet contains 325 mg of acetaminophen.
Caffeine Function
Caffeine is a popular ingredient found in many over-the-counter headache medications, including Excedrin. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and may work to relieve headache pain by potentiating the effects of other ingredients that inhibit pain. Unfortunately the stimulant effects of caffeine can cause insomnia and interfere with attempts towards relaxation. Since headaches may be a symptom of a more serious condition, individuals with severe, frequent or persistent headaches should always consult with a physician. Patients with concerns regarding the treatment of tension headaches should also speak to their physician.
