How to Talk to Your Kid About Sex

Many parents dread the idea of talking about sex with their kids. They may feel embarrassed to bring it up, but the longer you wait to have a sex talk, the more difficult it may be. Although many schools have sex education courses that cover the mechanics of sex and reproduction, they may not discuss the emotional side of sex. Experts such as Dr. Laura Berman recommend that body parts and functions be discussed as early as toddlerhood to build a healthy and open communication between the parent and the child.

Step 1

Use correct terminology. To avoid shame about the body, always refer to genitals by their correct name. Explain the function of each body part without making your child feel embarrassed.

Step 2

Allow the child to touch the body without scolding. However, emphasize that the child must do so privately and not in public. From as early as 2 to 3 years old, the child should be instructed not to touch anyone else's privates and to not allow anyone to touch his privates.

Step 3

Give age-appropriate information. Around fifth and sixth grade, a child may have questions about his body and the changes that puberty are starting to bring about. At this time, you will want to discuss proper anatomy and the type of changes that he can expect (hair growth, voice changes, wet dreams), including menstruation, if your child is female. The mechanics of sex are typically discussed at this age, along with contraception.

Step 4

Include your hopes for your child during the sex talk. Allow the child to know that you wish for the first time to be with someone he loves and trusts. Also, instruct your child on how to treat a person with respect after having sex. You want to build up the kid's self-esteem, as well as ensure that good sexual choices are made.

Step 5

Reinforce the sex talk during the teenage years. As hormones rage out of control, make sure you continue to discuss contraception, abstinence, pregnancy and masturbation.
