1. Natural Reaction
Burping is a natural reaction to gasses trapped in our digestive system. If we did not burp, everyone would be the size of parade balloons. Most of the time excessive burping is not a sign of a more serious health issue. Burping simply relieves the air trapped in the stomach and is a necessary event. If other issues such as abdominal pain accompany the burping, you should visit a doctor for a thorough examination.
2. Carbonated Drinks and Gum
Substitute water or another non-carbonated beverage to assist in alleviation of the excessive burping. Sodas and beer are the primary culprits. The carbonation creates excess gas in the digestive system and causes its release from the body by belching. Another culprit is chewing gum, which causes you to swallow air.
3. Relaxation and Exercise
Sometimes excessive burping can result from stress, and exercise can relieve this stress. Some people drum their fingers or play with their hair when they are nervous. Some may not even realize that when they experience anxiety they swallow air. So try to be aware the next time you are in a stressful situation, and notice if you start swallowing air. If so begin an exercise program and set aside time each day to just relax and be calm. Exercise and relaxation will not only help with the belching but they are good for your overall health.
4. Food Diary
Many foods can cause excessive burping, such as onions, chocolate, milk and ice cream. However, everyone's digestive systems reacts differently to food. Try to keep a food diary and note what you eat each time the burping becomes excessive. Then, try to reduce the intake of those foods.
5. Eating Air
Not only is it socially unacceptable to talk or chew with your mouth open while eating, it can be the cause of excessive burping. A person ingests unneeded air when they chew with their mouth open. Then the additional air comes back to haunt you, usually at the most socially awkward times. Chewing food thoroughly prevents a person from swallowing too much air as well. So keep the mouth closed when eating and talk after you swallow your food to prevent excessive burping and to be a more socially polite diner.
