Football is a high-impact sport with plenty of blocks, hits and tackles. As a result, football players can sustain many bumps, bruises and injuries. Protective football gear is required by football players of all levels from youth to professional and it is important that you purchase all the required and recommended football equipment for your league and know how to wear it properly. Gearing up for a football game can take several minutes.
Step 1
Gather all your football equipment. Because of the bulkiness of the equipment, you'll likely want to put your equipment on in the locker room instead of at home before the game.
Step 2
Remove all jewelry. For your safety and the safety of other players, remove any earrings, necklaces and other jewelry.
Step 3
Start with your lower body. Secure your protective cup, knee pads, hip pads and thigh pads. Ensure that they are fastened tightly but give yourself enough room to breathe. If you wear ankle protectors or shin pads, now is the time to place these protectors on. Pull on your football pants on. Secure your socks and put on your shoes.
Step 4
Gear your upper body up. Place your chest and rib protector vest on. This piece of equipment might also come with a tailbone pad or allow for the fastening of a tailbone pad. If you plan on wearing tailbone protection, attach it at this time. Put your shoulder pads on. Your shoulder pads might be able to be secured to your chest protector. Next, put on your forearm pads and elbow protectors.
Step 5
Protect your head and neck. Several varieties of neck rolls are available that help to hold your neck in place. They reduce the impact of tackles and help protect your neck from injury. If your wear a neck pad, secure it at this time. Next, place your helmet on and fasten your chin strap.
Step 6
Finalize your gear. Before entering the game, place your mouth guard in.
