Walk into a store and ask for a hockey shirt and you might get a boxy, two-tone jersey, or a tight-fitting, humorous T-shirt depicting a hockey player saying, "Teeth are overrated." Hockey shirts come in a variety of styles that work for the serious player, the NHL fan or the hockey buff and enthusiast who likes silly sayings.
T-Shirts
Hockey T-shirts can have short or long sleeves and are generally cotton or a cotton blend. Humorous hockey shirts can feature comical illustrations, witty sayings or both, while other T-shirts showcase your favorite NHL team name, logo and colors. T-shirts for men and children are usually the crew-neck varieties, while women's shirts can have a V-neck or tailored fit.
NHL Jerseys
NHL hockey jerseys resemble the same sweaters pros wear, right down to the colors, graphics and designs. The long-sleeve shirts can include custom options like your favorite number or player's name, but not all of them do. NHL jerseys are polyester mesh blended with spandex and include reinforced seams and stitching. The front design is a combination of embroidery and appliqué twill. Authentic NHL jerseys are officially licensed by the league, while others, such as premier NHL jerseys, are not.
Other Jerseys
Hockey jerseys worn during your own games are similar to the NHL jerseys but not as fancy. They are usually polyester mesh or another synthetic, breathable fabric and have long sleeves. Colors and designs vary, but most have at least two contrasting colors, room for your team name on the front and your last name on the back above your number. The letters and numbers are usually ironed on. You can have the shirts customized for your specific team and buy them in sets. Padded jerseys are available for extra protection.
Buying
Hockey shirts are available at many sports and hockey gear retailers, with T-shirts also available at novelty and T-shirt shops. Prices for T-shirts generally start around $20, as of 2011, the same price as custom team jerseys for your own games. Mesh practice jerseys cost $16. Authentic NHL jerseys are the most expensive option, with prices at $200 or more per jersey. Premier NHL jerseys are about half the price of the authentic jerseys, starting around $100.
