No racket is designed only for men or women. All tennis rackets are capable of being used by either sex. However, there are some trends. Women generally choose lighter, longer, larger, stiffer rackets for increases in power and reach. Men generally choose shorter, heavier, more control-oriented rackets to limit power and impart more spin on the ball. You should always choose a racket based on your strengths and needs as a player, rather than your gender.
Head Sizes
A tennis racket's head size is the total area that the strings occupy within the round area of the frame. Tennis racket head sizes are measured in square inches, with most rackets ranging between 90 and 120 square inches. Larger head sizes provide more power and forgiveness on shots. In general, women choose rackets with larger head sizes for additional power, while men opt for rackets with smaller head sizes.
Length
The length of a tennis racket is measured from the bottom, or butt, of the racket straight up to the top of the frame. Most rackets are between 27 and 29 inches long. Longer rackets offer more power, because of the increase in torque, and give you a greater reach so you can hit balls that are farther away from you. Women generally choose longer rackets because it allows them to get to more balls and hit with more power. Men may choose longer rackets for more power on the serve, or shorter rackets for more maneuverability.
Stiffness
A racket's stiffness refers to the amount the racket flexes or bends when it contacts the ball. Stiffer rackets are more powerful because less energy is lost on bending the frame. More flexible rackets are less powerful, but offer more spin. Women generally choose stiffer rackets for more power, while men usually select more flexible rackets for additional control and spin.
Grip Size
Grip sizes on tennis rackets range from 4 to 4 5/8 inches. Grip size is measured as the circumference of the grip. To determine your grip size, measure from the top age line on your palm directly to the top of your ring finger. Because women generally have smaller hands, they choose rackets with smaller grip sizes. Men normally select larger sizes, or increase the size of the grip with aftermarket overgrips and wraps.
