How to Choose an International Adoption Agency

Adopting can be a painful and stressful process, and seeking out a child internationally is even more problematic. The distance created by an international adoption only creates greater strain on a couple and makes them rely more on the information provided to them by the adoption agency. But it's also important to remember that adoption agencies are businesses, and it's important to keep your emotions in check and not let them obscure your vision or thoughts when dealing with agencies.

Step 1

Take two to three months to investigate international adoption agencies from a business perspective. Look at the various adoption programs offered and the costs. Look at the processes for the programs that appeal to you, and decide which ones you might want (see Resources below).

Step 2

Attend an information meeting hosted by the agency you've selected in Step 1, or schedule an individual interview or phone call if a meeting is not an option.

Step 3

Ask questions. Find out what kind of educational support the agency offers to parents adopting a child from a different culture or one with special needs. Also find out what support the agency offers after the adoption. Don't walk away without having every minor question in your head answered.

Step 4

Contact or join an adoptive parent support group which will provide emotional support as well as vital information to know when dealing with adoption agencies (see Resources below).

Step 5

Understand all the costs associated with the adoption prior to signing an agreement. The total cost for an international adoption can be anywhere from $7,000 to $30,000, depending on where the child is from and what agency you are adopting through. There are also unspecified costs, such as transportation to and from the country, escorting fees, and any medical care or treatment the child may need before entering the country. You will also have to pay an INS filing fee and visa application and issuance fees, which can combine to cost around $800.
