When planning to cook fish while backpacking, you have two options: either using an open fire or coals or a gas stove. However, since campfires are prohibited in many areas, a backpacking gas stove may be your only option to cook fish and other foods in the wilderness. In fact, backpacking stoves have replaced cooking over open flames, according to REI. The stoves are lightweight and all the components pack into a small package that take little room in your backpack. Regardless of which way you choose to cook your fish, you can make a delicious seafood meal while backpacking with few ingredients.
Grilling Fish with a Backpacking Stove
Step 1
Brush or drizzle olive oil, salt and lemon pepper onto two fish fillets. You can use any fish you desire but for best result use fillets that are at least 1-inch thick. Fish flakes easily and the thicker the fillet the easier it is to handle it. Additionally, add garlic onto the fish also.
Step 2
Start the fire on your gas backpacking stove as described on the instructions.
Step 3
Place the fillets onto the stove and cook for few minutes. Turn the fillets after 2-3 minutes, using a wide spatula. Cook until the fish begins to flake.
Step 4
Serve with wild rice cooked with dehydrated corn and tomatoes.
Grilling Fish on a Campfire
Step 1
Brush the fish fillets with olive oil, salt and lemon pepper. Let marinate until the coals are ready.
Step 2
Start a fire and burn until you have only coals left. Break and spread the coals evenly.
Step 3
Wrap the fillets with a foil and place them onto the coals. Cook for few minutes and turn. Cook for another few minutes and open the package to check if fish is done. Fish will flake when done.
Step 4
Serve with wild rice cooked with dehydrated corn and tomatoes.
Tips and Warnings
- Pack frozen fish fillets when you go backpacking. These frozen fillets should be thawed by the first or second night and ready to be cooked.
- Always find out if campfires are allowed on the area you are going and get a campfire permit. Clear a large area for the fire and build a fire ring with rocks to prevent forest fires. Keep a water container handy and always put the fire out before going to bed.
