One of the goals of the South Beach Diet is to help reduce your cravings and intake of sugars and unhealthy carbohydrates. This results from eliminating certain foods from your diet. Honey is one of those items you'll need to avoid until you reach your goal weight; you can then reintroduce it back into your diet. Understanding why honey is not allowed, and using honey alternatives, will help you make decisions that keep you on track.
Honey
The South Beach Diet requires you to avoid sugars. Even though honey is a natural sweetener, the high sugar content may hinder your weight loss. In addition to avoiding honey as a sweetener for your tea or other foods, you must also avoid other honey products. This includes foods such as honey ham or other honey-glazed proteins. As part of the South Beach Diet, you'll need to avoid many processed foods, but if you see a product that you think fits the whole-grain guidelines, make sure you read the label to make sure the product does not contain honey or other nutrients you should avoid or limit -- such as high fat content.
Other Options
If you used honey as a sweetener before you started the South Beach Diet you may need to find alternatives. You may use products such as aspartame, sucralose or saccharin. If you used honey as a condiment for toast or other foods, you may want to consider using sugar-free jams or jellies as a replacement.
Phase 3
After you reach your weight loss goal, you begin following phase 3 of the South Beach Diet. In this phase, you can resume eating all foods, including those previously not allowed such as honey. Even though you can eat all foods, you will need to choose foods wisely and eat in moderation to avoid re-gaining the weight you lost. If you missed honey during the first two phases, find ways to make honey a part of special meals, or have a teaspoon of honey with your morning tea or toast.
Considerations
Prior to starting a low-carbohydrate diet or other diet that severely restricts your food intake, speak with your doctor to consider the possible benefits of the South Beach Diet as well as the associated risks. If you proceed with the diet plan, take time to review all the allowed foods and the foods to avoid before your first day on the diet, as this will help you stay on track.
