All treadmills make some noise. However, while some noises are normal, others may indicate a problem. Horizon Fitness says if the noise is louder than a normal tone of voice, you should investigate. If your treadmill squeaks, check the nuts, bolts and belt before contacting a professional service company.
Lubrication
Some treadmill belts require lubrication with a wax or silicone product. Check your owner's manual to confirm you don't have a maintenance-free belt. These belts don't need lubrication and you can damage the belt if you apply any spray or oil. If your belt becomes dry, this causes increased friction between the belt and other parts, such as the deck and rollers. This friction can result in a squeaking sound. Lubricate your belt according to the instructions in your owner's manual.
Loose Parts
The deck and frame of your treadmill have numerous bolts and screws that hold the pieces together. If the bolts or screws become loose, parts can rub together, resulting in a squeaking noise. Treadmill manufacturers recommend that you routinely walk around your treadmill and tighten any loose nuts and bolts, especially the bolts around the edge of the walking deck. You will need a screwdriver and the Allen wrenches that came with your machine.
Center Belt
The walking belt may drift to one side, causing it to rub against the side rails or the motor hood. Test the belt by observing it from the back end of the treadmill while it runs at medium speed. If the belt shifts to one side, adjust the bolts on the back end to center the belt. Follow the directions in your owner's manual as each brand of treadmill has slightly different belt-adjustment techniques.
Dust and Dirt
Dust and dirt can accumulate around the treadmill belt, the motor and the rollers. Buildup of these contaminants can cause friction and squeaking. Unplug your treadmill, remove the motor hood and vacuum the debris from around the motor. Move the treadmill to the side and vacuum the area under your machine. After each workout, wipe down the running belt and the rails. Do not use any sprays or solvents. Wipe your machine with a clean, soft cloth.
