Urocit-K is a brand name of a potassium supplement used to boost the potassium in people who have low levels of it because of their diet. It also may be recommended for you if you have decreased potassium levels brought about by the use of medicine or because you have been sick. Potassium supplements are available over-the-counter (OTC) or under the supervision of your physician.
Serious Typical Side Effects
The use of Urocit-K and other potassium supplements may cause some serious side effects. Those more often reported by people taking the supplement include leg weakness, mental confusion, a feeling of heaviness in the legs, bradycardia (slow heartbeat), uncommon bodily weakness, irregular heartbeats, abnormal tiredness in the body, lip tingling or numbness, feet tingling or numbing, tingling or numbing in the hands, anxiety that appears to have no cause and breathing difficulties (including shortness of breath).
Serious Rare Side Effects
Rarer, but still serious, side effects include blood in the stools that may appear as black or red in color, continual pain in the abdomen, pain in the chest, continual cramps or pain in the stomach, and pain in the throat, particularly during swallowing.
Temporary Side Effects
Using Urocit-K also may cause some discomfort from side effects that will go away as you continue to use it. These generally will be mild side effects. Report them to your physician only if the continue or bother you. They include vomiting, diarrhea, gas in the stomach, nausea, and discomfort or pain in the stomach.
Overdose
Too much Urocit-K or potassium in your body is called hyperkalemia. According to RxList.com, if there is an extreme decrease or increase in the amount of potassium in your body, it can cause severe problems for the heart and central nervous system. Under extreme conditions, this type of effect can cause death. This is why the Mayo Clinic recommends taking Urocit-K only under the guidance of a doctor.
