The National Library of Medicine (NLM) explains that testosterone occurs naturally in men and is important for many daily functions such as growth, sex organ functioning and the development of typical male characteristics. Men who experience a low level of testosterone may be prescribed topical testosterone. The application of topical testosterone can improve the levels of the hormone in men but it may produce unwanted side effects, warns Drugs.com.
Effects to Others
The NLM warns users of testosterone to prevent others from coming in contact with the topical gel or the skin where it was applied. This type of contact made by women, children and even pregnant women can result in harm. The NLM suggests women may exhibit unusual hair growth or acne. They point out that children may experience enlarged genitals, pubic hair growth, increased erections, increased sexual desire and aggressive behavior. These effects may be temporary, explains the NLM, but other lasting effects in children may include early bone maturity.
