Glomerulonephritis occurs when your glomeruli -- small structures within your kidneys -- become inflamed. There are two principal types of glomerulonephritis: primary and secondary. Primary glomerulonephritis develops on its own, while secondary glomerulonephritis is caused by another condition, such as Hodgkin's disease. Herbs may be a helpful therapy in the treatment of glomerulonephritis, although you should always ask your doctor about herbs before using them.

Glomerulonephritis

If your glomeruli are damaged, both blood and protein will be lost in your urine. Risk factors that may increase your chances of developing this condition include a history of cancer; blood disorders; various types of infection; and numerous health conditions such as diabetes, Goodpasture syndrome and vasculitis. Common signs and symptoms associated with glomerulonephritis include foamy or bloody urine, swelling in various parts of your body, and abdominal pain.

Appropriate Herbs

Phyllis A. Balch, a certified nutritional consultant and author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," states that glomerulonephritis is a common immunological response to infection. There are several herbs that may be helpful in treating kidney-related conditions such as glomerulonephritis, including celery seeds, parsley seeds, buchu tea, cranberries, bearberry, dandelion root, hydrangea, red clover, goldenrod, nettle and marshmallow. Herbs traditionally used in treating this health problem may require further scientific study to examine their true action within your body.

Herb in Focus

Celery seeds -- and sometimes the roots of the celery plant -- are a frequently prescribed herbal remedy in the treatment of various kidney problems, including glomerulonephritis. Ed Smith, an expert herbalist and author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," states that celery seed is a mild diuretic and urinary antiseptic. This herbal remedy has also historically been used in treating high blood pressure -- a condition that often contributes to kidney problems. You should avoid using large amounts of this herb, especially if you have a kidney disorder, notes Smith.

Warning

There are many possible health complications associated with glomerulonephritis, including nephrotic syndrome, chronic kidney failure, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections. If you develop the symptoms of glomerulonephritis, consult your doctor immediately. Avoid using herbal remedies in lieu of other, more conventional therapies for this condition. Before using herbal remedies to treat your glomerulonephritis, discuss the merits and drawbacks of herbs with your primary care provider.
