A heart rate monitor can improve your exercise performance by providing data regarding the effects of exercise on your cardiovascular system. Ideally, you should exercise within your target heart rate zone, recommends the American Heart Association. This wireless interface of heart rate monitors allows you to read your electrocardiogram to gauge the intensity of your workouts.

Types of Heart Rate Monitors

Your heart rate monitor will provide real-time feedback regarding how fast your heart is beating in response to exercise. Two basic types of heart rate monitors obtain this information. Chest strap monitors include a strap that fits around your chest and detects your heart beat which it then transmits to a wristwatch display. Alternatively, some monitors will transmit data via a short range wireless connectivity standard connection. You must pair your device to receive data as per your smartphone or computer instructions.

Collecting Data

Heart rate monitors collect data through electrodes placed on the skin. A chest strap includes an electric chip within the device to transmit the data via a wireless connection. To ensure proper data collection, a unique identifier pairs the device to help minimize interference from external factors like power lines. Some companies have developed proprietary technology to maximize performance and eliminate interference.

Additional Features

Heart rate monitors provide accurate data. Some factors may influence the type of device you choose. Going with a wireless-connected device gives you the ability to collect more information regarding your workout. Some fitness programs for smartphones will use GPS technology to provide additional data such as distance and calories. The advantage of using a chest strap and wristwatch or smartphone is that you will receive continuous data throughout your workout.

Using Your Heart Monitor

Regular maintenance is essential In order to maximize the performance of your heart rate monitor. Any interference with data collection at the site of the electrodes will impair wireless transmission of data. You should periodically clean your the sensor sites on your heart rate monitor per manufacturer recommendations. Your chest strap should be stored clean and dry between uses.
