The South Beach Diet is one of many types of low-carbohydrate diet plan, but rather than eating fatty protein with abandon, this diet helps you learn to choose low-fat options. You must select certain meats, but you can have any type of fish or seafood. If you do not eat seafood you should not notice any ill effects. You may need to consider proteins you haven't tried before so that you'll have a variety of options to choose from.
Seafood
Some people who do not eat seafood will still eat some types of fish such as tuna and salmon. You can have these and other varieties of fish on the South Beach Diet, and these sources make good, light protein options.
Other Animal Proteins
If you avoid fish and seafood completely, but you eat other animal-based proteins, you need to make sure that you select lean cuts of meat. Look for lean sirloin, tenderloin or London broil when you select beef. If you eat pork, choose pork loin, chops a roast, as well as Canadian bacon or boiled ham. Make sure any ham you purchase does not contain honey. You may also choose skinless chicken or turkey breast.
Plant-Based Proteins
In addition to meat products, you can also get some of your protein from plant sources, an important part of the plan if you follow a vegetarian diet. Beans, such as kidney beans, split peas and pinto beans provide a good protein source. You may also eat soy products such as tofu, soy burgers and soy crumbles, but you must make sure that these products contain 6 g of fat or less for a 2 or 3 oz. serving.
