Side Effects of Lumigan

Lumigan is the brand name of bimatoprost opthalmic, a medication used to treat certain types of glaucoma andother causes of high pressure in the eyes and to improve fullness, length and color of eyelashes. The drops, when used for eye pressure problems, help reduce the pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid that drains from the eye, according to Drugs.com. As with any medication, Lumigan has the potential for side effects.

Common Side Effects

Drugs.com notes users may experience mild discomfort while applying the drops. EMedTV.com indicates the most common side effects--eye redness, increased eyelash growth and eye itching--occur in 15 to 45 percent of users. Other mild effects may occur in 3 to 10 percent of cases, according to eMedTV.com. These hazards include eye dryness, eye burning or pain, the sensation of something in the eye, darkening of the eyelids, inflammation or redness of the eyelids, eye irritation, darkening of the eyelashes, eye discharge or tearing, eye fatigue and/or darkening of the iris.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects should be reported to a doctor. These hazards, according to Drugs.com, may include redness, swelling, itching, pain in or around the eye, oozing or discharge from the eye, increased sensitivity to light and/or vision changes. EMedTV.com indicates that users may develop cataracts in fewer than 3 to 10 percent of cases.

Allergic Reaction

Some individuals may experience a sensitivity or allergy to Lumigan. Drugs.com identifies the serious side effects of an allergic reaction as hives, breathing troubles and swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat.
