Genetics determine whether you have cellulite, and it tends to occur more in women than men. Regular use of your muscles through exercise can increase circulation and promote drainage through the veins and lymphatic vessels, and this action may also help minimize the appearance of cellulite, according to Lionel Bissoon, author of “The Cellulite Cure.” While no exercise can completely eliminate cellulite from your butt once it occurs, there are many that can reduce its appearance.
The Importance of Cardio
One of the best exercises to perform to minimize the appearance of cellulite is cardio. Running, biking, swimming, indoor cycling, elliptical training and high intensity cardio sports such as soccer will burn significant amounts of calories. Because cellulite is fat, regular sessions of cardio – at least four times a week for 45 minutes to an hour each time – will help your body to burn its fat stores, thereby reducing the accumulation of cellulite on your butt.
Squats
The squat is an extremely versatile exercise that affords a high-intensity workout for the big muscles of your butt – the almighty glutes – as well as the large muscles of your legs such as the quadriceps and hamstrings. Examples of the squat include the body weight squat and squats using free weights such as dumbbell squats. Each of these resistance exercises helps your body to build muscle, and the more muscle you have the more fat you will burn off at rest, thereby helping to avoid the accumulation of cellulite on your butt.
Lunges
Lunges work the muscles of your butt as well the muscles of your thighs. Forward lunges and side lunges can be done using your own body weight for resistance. For added intensity, perform forward or side lunges with dumbbells or barbells. Frequent cardio combined with resistance exercises such as lunges that target the glutes will help you reduce the appearance of cellulite on your butt.
Caffeine and Diet
Certain diet modifications coupled with exercise may also help reduce the appearance of cellulite on your butt. Increase your fiber intake and cut back on the calories you consume so that your body utilizes more of its fat stores for energy. In a double-blind, randomized 2001 French study of 46 women published in the “Journal of Cosmetic Science,” cellulite reducing creams that contained caffeine visibly reduced the “orange peel effect” characteristic of cellulite.
