The split finger is a pitch that baseball pitchers throw to deceive hitters and keep them off balance. Split finger pitches utilize a unique grip that gives the pitch away so the pitcher's grip on the baseball must be concealed in the glove before it is thrown. Many pitchers use the split finger as their strikeout pitch or if they need to get a ground ball.

Step 1

Grip the ball with your middle finger and index finger on the outside of the horseshoe seams. Your fingers will form a "v" on the ball. Position your thumb on the bottom of the ball.

Step 2

Take your regular wind-up and throw the pitch with your fastball motion and arm speed.

Step 3

Spread your fingers a little farther apart for a slower pitch. Move them a little closer together for a faster pitch.

Step 4

Conceal your grip as long as possible. Do not to allow the opposition see you taking your split-fingered grip before the pitch.
