Nexium, or esomeprazole magnesium, is a prescription drug that is used to reduce excessive stomach acid production and treat gastric disorders such as indigestion, stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions. Additionally, it helps in healing the lining of the esophagus that may have become eroded due to stomach acid. As with any medication, Nexium has the potential to produce side effects.

Headaches

Headaches are among the most frequently reported side effects from taking this medication. While headaches can be caused by a variety of health-related factors, if they occur after taking this medication, patients should contact the prescribing physician.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Common reported side effects from taking this medication include abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, as well as diarrhea. Other minor side effects that are possible include dry mouth, excessive gas or abdominal bloating, constipation and hiccups.

Other Effects

Other less frequent side effects associated with this drug consist of skin problems such as rash, dizziness, insomnia, nervousness or confusion. Also, while rare, irregular heartbeats, muscle and joint pain, as well as leg cramps may be experienced. Lastly, peripheral edema from retained fluid may present. These potential effects are considered to be rare, however if any of them persist, a physician should be consulted.
