Stretching Exercise DVDs for Seniors

Many health and fitness experts recommend that seniors use flexibility exercises to increase joint mobility and improve overall health. As we age, we find that our joints are less mobile, which limits our range of motion. The use of stretching DVDs will encourage seniors to increase their flexibility safely and effectively. Some DVDs are specially designed for a particular time of day or for certain positions depending on the current physical condition of the senior.

Stretching Recommendations for Seniors

In 2007, the ACSM and the American Heart Association released updated physical activity guidelines for older adults noting that stretching exercises improve the flexibility of the senior exerciser. However, stretching should only be attempted after first performing a very gentle warm up. The ACSM recommends flexibility training a minimum of 2 to 3 days per week. Each stretch should be held for 10 to 30 seconds to mild discomfort. Do three to four repetitions per stretch.
