Losing weight is a rewarding endeavor. You feel better about the way you look, and your body feels healthier, with more energy. However, dieting itself can seem daunting, especially in the first few weeks when you hope to see a significant drop in your weight. The South Beach Diet may offer you the quick, initial weight loss that will keep you motivated to stick to the plan. Keep in mind that you may respond differently to a restrictive diet.

Phase 1

The first phase of the South Beach Diet requires that you cut out all bread, pasta, rice and other carbohydrates. You also cut out sugars and starches, including all fruit and some vegetables. As a result of restricting these types of foods, you may notice a considerable drop in weight during this two-week period. The creator of the plan, Dr. Arthur Agatston, says that you will most likely lose between 8 and 13 pounds.

Phase 2

After you finish the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet, you move into phase 2. You will gradually add in fruits such as oranges, strawberries and cantaloupe, as well as some of the vegetables not allowed in phase 1. You will also start eating carbohydrates again, but you will need to select whole-grain versions, such as whole-wheat pasta and brown rice. Dr. Agatston says that during this second phase, many people experience an average weight loss of 1 or 2 pounds each week.

Keeping It Off

You follow the second phase of the South Beach Diet until you reach your goal weight. The amount of time this will take depends on the amount of weight you need to lose, as well as how closely you follow the plan. After you meet your goal, you enter the third, or maintenance, phase of the program. In this phase, you can eat any food you like, but the plan encourages you to practice moderation and continue making low-fat, whole-grain choices.

Considerations

Most people who follow a diet such as the South Beach Diet that focuses on whole grains, lean proteins and no added sugar will lose weight. If you think this program could work for you, talk with your doctor. She can discuss any possible risks and help you compare them with the benefits associated with the program.
